Passive versus active bed cooling

Passive cooling

Passive products use construction and materials to release heat or move moisture. Sheets, pillowcases, protectors and lightweight blankets fall into this group. They require no power and are usually the simplest place to begin.

Active cooling

Active systems continuously move air or temperature-controlled water. They can offer stronger ongoing cooling, but cost more and may introduce noise, maintenance, hoses, pads or controls.

Cool touch is not continuous cooling

A surface may feel cool at first because it draws heat from the skin. Once temperatures equalize, that sensation can fade. Continuous active systems work differently because they keep moving heat away.

Choosing between them

Start with passive changes when bedding feels heavy or damp. Consider active cooling when disruption remains frequent after simpler changes, or when one side of the bed needs targeted control.

Cooling products may improve comfort, but they do not treat the cause of night sweats. New, severe or persistent symptoms should be discussed with a qualified healthcare professional.
